Most years the month of May sees the beginning of the change of seasons here in the cloud forest. Perhaps you could see it as analogous to a Northern Spring season: the temperature really doesn’t change but we start to get more average hours of sunlight, not due to any tilting of the Earth’s axis but to a bit less cloud cover and lower general humidity.
These changes are intimately tied to the phenological rhythms of the forest and the relative abundance or scarcity of wild fruit for the birds. Long story short, our fruit feeder stations are jumping, jamming right now and there’s almost no one coming through to see. Just so you don’t forget, mark May 2021 down on your calendar and think about coming to visit us then!
Here we feel fortunate that our various programs are complementary and rely on different market triggers and income streams. After thorough analysis, we’re convinced that this year’s budget works, and so we won’t need to reduce staff or make radical changes. – We will spend more time on training and improving all aspects of our Bird Sanctuaries such that we’re ready to help you enjoy the extraordinary diversity we have when you´re ready.
Not so for many of our friends and colleagues, independent bird guides and tourism agencies who strictly rely on the tourist market for their livelihoods. Our sympathy and solidarity for them in these trying times. We look forward to seeing you on the other side!
